First Rule: Don’t Pop Them
Somebody walked the roof and came down saying the membrane looks like bubble wrap. Before anything else, two rules. Don’t step on the blisters. And whatever your maintenance guy’s instincts say, don’t cut them open or pop them. A closed blister is a weak spot. An opened blister is a hole, and now the rain that was coming Tuesday is your problem instead of your roofer’s.
A blister is trapped gas. Moisture or solvent vapor got sealed between the layers of the roof, either between plies of a modified bitumen roof, between the membrane and the insulation on a glued-down single-ply, or between insulation and deck. Sun heats the roof, the trapped gas expands, and the layers get pushed apart into a bubble. Every hot afternoon inflates it. Every cold night it relaxes. That daily flexing is what matters, because it slowly fatigues the membrane and grows the debonded area around the blister.
Read Your Blisters Before You Spend Anything
Grab your photos and look for these distinctions. They’re the difference between “monitor it” and “budget for a roof.”
- Few and stable versus many and multiplying. A handful of small blisters that look the same year after year is common, especially on older mod-bit. Blisters appearing across the field in one season means moisture is getting in somewhere, or was sealed in on day one.
- Intact surface versus cracked surface. Run your eye over the top of the blister. Smooth membrane, even stretched, is still doing its job. Cracking, crazing, or exposed reinforcement fabric on the crown means the stretching has worn through the weathering surface. That blister is a leak in progress.
- Firm versus squishy. A blister that gives like a waterbed underfoot (probe gently from the side, don’t stand on it) may have liquid water in it, not just vapor. Water inside the roof assembly did not teleport there. It has a path, and that path is open.
- Field versus seams and flashings. Blisters in the open field are an adhesion story. Bubbling along seams and flashings is a different and more urgent story, because those are the joints holding the water out.
Cheap monitoring trick: mark each blister’s edge with a paint pen, write the date next to it, photograph it. Do it again in three months. Growth tells you more than any opinion from the ground.
Why Your Roof Blistered
Blisters are almost always born on installation day. Adhesive that hadn’t flashed off before the sheet went down. Membrane laid over a deck that was damp at seven in the morning. Insulation that got rained on in the staging pile and went up anyway. The roof sealed that moisture in, and physics has been working on it ever since. The other source is a slow leak: water gets in at a distant failure point, migrates through the assembly, and announces itself as blisters far from the entry point. That’s the version that should worry you, because the blisters are the visible tip of wet insulation you can’t see.
The Patch Trap, Blister Edition
You can cut out a blister, dry the area, and patch it properly. On one or two bad blisters, that’s a legitimate repair, and a competent local roofer can do it. The trap is doing that math one blister at a time across a roof where the adhesion or the moisture problem is everywhere. Twenty patches on a blistered roof is twenty new seams on a membrane that already told you its layers aren’t holding together. At some point you’re paying patch prices to renovate a roof that’s asking to be replaced. The repair-or-replace framework puts real numbers on where that point is.

Will roof blisters go away on their own?
No. They may shrink in cold weather and look better in November than July, but the debonded area never re-adheres itself. Best case, a small vapor blister stays stable for years. Worst case, it grows, the crown fatigues, and it opens. That's why dated photos beat wishful thinking.
Are blisters covered under a manufacturer warranty?
Sometimes, and it depends on the cause. Blistering from defective membrane can be a warranty claim. Blistering from installation moisture or wet materials usually lands on workmanship, which is why a system warranty covering both membrane and labor matters. Can you install a new roof over a blistered one?
